While the Saturn Aura Hybrid does not feature a complete two-mode hybrid system, it includes a regular 164 horsepower 2.4L I4. The hybrid technology comes in with a larger starter motor. This motor will shut down the engine when the vehicle is stopped at a light or elsewhere, but still powers the vehicle’s accessories. Also, the starter motor does not require a complete restart, which would use more gasoline. Because of the lack of the two-mode system, most critics claim that the Aura is not a true hybrid; rather they are calling it a “mild hybrid.” Not only that, the fuel efficiency reflects its “mild hybridness” with only 26 city MPG and 34 highway MPG. Though that is a significant increase from regular four-door sedans on the market, it does not compare to the Toyota Prius or other A-list hybrids.

The Saturn Aura features a six-speed automatic transmission with driver shift controls located on the steering wheel. This transmission allows drivers to have the convenience of an automatic with the control of a manual. A number of audio systems are available in the model, and XM Satellite Radio is included with a three-month trial subscription. XM provides hundreds of various radio channels without commercials. Automatic climate control is standard, while heated front seats, power windows, and power-adjustable front seats are optional.

One of the most appealing additions for 2009 is available through the IRS. They have officially listed the Saturn Aura Hybrid as one of the models that qualifies for a $1,300 tax credit. So, while buyers will pay $24,930 for the Aura, they will also receive a credit on their income taxes for this year. Though the 2009 Saturn Aura is not technically a full hybrid, because of its improved fuel economy, it emits fewer pollutants into the environment. So, buyers will both save money and be more environmentally friendly.

Overall, the 2009 Saturn Aura Hybrid is a pleasant mix of hybrid technology (to some extent), style, and affordability. Buyers looking to make less of an impact on the environment but not sacrifice good taste will find a great fit in the Aura. However, larger families or individuals looking for a true hybrid with exceptional fuel efficiency should look elsewhere.

The fuel saving and environmentally preferred hybrid technology is delivered in the form of 2.4 liter inline 4 cylinder engine that works in conjunction with an electric motor and batteries to produce164 horsepower. Regenerative braking, which turns kinetic energy from braking into electrical energy, charges the hybrid system’s batteries. The mpg for this model is rated at 28 mpg city and 35 miles per gallon highway, which is about 8 mpg more than what can be achieved with the non-hybrid Aura models.

Other manufacturers have produced hybrid vehicles that are capable of running part time solely on electric power, which is not the case with the Greenline and therefore it is not quite as fuel efficient as some other midsize hybrids. However, the Greenline has a much lower sticker price than most of the competition, with the average retail price for midsize sedan hybrids being approximately $31,000 and the Greenline coming in at just over $22,000. In fact, in comparison to non-hybrid midsize sedans, which averaged at about $28,000 for the 2007 mode year comparably equipped, Saturn’s Saturn Aura Hybrid model is still a great deal.

In addition to fuel savings and cleaner emissions, the Saturn Aura Hybrid offers room for 5 passengers in a comfortable and spacious cabin with European inspired flare throughout. Safety and security are provided via four-wheel antilock disc brakes, head curtain and side airbags, traction control and stability control. Although not one of the speediest mid size hybrids, the ride is smooth and the appearance is just as inviting and attractive as the low sticker price.

281 horsepower for the XE and 288 horsepower for the XR. It’s matched up with a six speed automatic transmission with overdrive. This combination gives Outlook a better than average for class fuel efficiency at seventeen mpg in the city and twenty-four mpg on the highway in the front-wheel drive configuration. With all wheel-drive the numbers are one mile per gallon less in each category.

Outlook also gets good marks for safety from NHTSA, with ratings of five-star all around for crash tests and four-star for rollover. That’s as good as it gets for this type car. Safety features on the Outlook include a tire pressure monitor; child safety locks; vehicle anti-theft system; antilock brakes; traction and stability control; and airbags all around - all standard.

In spite of the few complaints, the truth is that the 2009 Saturn Outlook is a good looking, good quality vehicle, especially when it is considered as part of the General Motors “make a million cars and give them all different names” production plan. That’s even truer when you realize that the base price, at $29,380, is about five thousand dollars below average for the class, which makes it competitive with the Traverse and cheaper than either of its other cousins.

Packages that can be added to the 2009 Astra include the Advanced Audio Package, Premium Trim Package, and Sports Handling Package. Items like a six-disc in-dash CD changer, leather seating, and 17-inch machined alloy wheels are just a few that can be found in these packages. Also, there are a number of additional accessories that can be tacked on to give the Astra that personal touch.

Safety features like active front head restraints, rear door child safety locks, a passenger sensing system, and rain-sensing windshield wipers are all standard on the Saturn Astra. The windshield wipers automatically engage when moisture is detected, and the passenger sensing system will modify the airbag force and angle based on the front passenger’s position, mass, and height.

On the whole, the 2009 Saturn Astra is a strong competitor in its class. Families with children will appreciate the maker’s attention to safety details, and individuals should be pleased with the package options. Both will find that the fuel economy is notable. With an intro price of $17,045, the Astra is priced just a bit higher than some of the comparables, but with endorsements from Motorweek and Autoweek, it seems to be well worth the money.

Model year and maintains the same contemporary exterior design and impressive fuel economy. With a reasonable intro asking price, the Astra is a good pick for those on a budget. And, with three trims available, the Saturn Astra can be customized to fit each driver’s needs. Though the drivetrain is humble, this 2009 Saturn beats most of the competition in terms of appropriate power. Some buyers could opt for a hybrid model that will certainly boast higher fuel efficiency than the Astra, but those that want a gas-powered model with little impact on the environment will find that this station hatchback is a solid pick.
